If there's one question I get more than any other here at espressoshack.com it's a question comparing one espresso machine to another. People always seem to narrow down their search to a couple of different espresso makers and then can't decide between them!
So today I'm going to compare the Briel Chamonix espresso machine to the Cuisinart EM-100 Espresso Maker.Why These Two?
The reason why I'm comparing these two machines is because they are two of my favorite entry level machines. If you're someone who either;
- Is new to the world of home espresso making
- Doesn't have a whole lot of money to spend but want a decent machine
First let's take a quick look at the Briel Chamonix. This is the more expensive of the two machines at around $200. My first espresso machine was a Briel and I used it for the better part of a decade without any trouble. It's true that this machine is a little pricey for an entry model, and if price is your main motivator then go with the Cuisinart. But if you've got a few extra dollars then you want to seriously consider this machine.
Here we have the Cuisinart EM-100. At around $120 I really *really* like this machine. It has a definite look to it with it's stainless steel exterior. It has all the bells and whistles you'd want when buying any espresso machine and has a ton of great customer reviews.So Which One Is Right For You?
These are both great machines, with great customer reviews, and both will work great for you. You have to ask yourself what your main motivation is.
Is price your main sticking point? If so, go with the cheaper Cuisinart. If price isn't such a big deal then consider the Briel.
The fact of the matter is that I find it very hard to recommend one of these machines over the other. Both are really great machines. Even though the Briel is about $80 more expensive, it really isn't going to give you a cup of espresso that tastes any better than the Cuisinart.
Consider looks. The Cuisinart has a definite look to it that some people aren't a fan of. If you aren't into the whole stainless steel look, then you'll want to go with the Briel. It seems strange to base a decision like this on looks, but sometimes when the machines are so close to each other in every other way, the only thing you can do is pick the one that looks nicer to you.What's The Bottom Line?
You can read in depth reviews on each machine right here on this site. The Briel Chamonix review is located on the list of links at the bottom of this page and the Cuisinart EM-100 review is located in the Cuisinart section on the menu at the right side of every page on the site.
I almost universally recommend the Cuisinart EM-100 to people just starting out in the world of espresso. It's a cheap machine, it looks great, it works great, and it's easy to use. On the other hand, if you have a few extra dollars and want a slightly nicer machine, then go with the Briel Chamonix. Either way, you really won't be disappointed with either selection.
