NISSAN FREERIDE DE TIGNES: European Victory on the Grand Balme

The Nissan Freeride de Tignes, the third stage of the Freeride World Tour, took place on the impressive Grand Balme face, left untouched for this competition. After patiently awaiting the best conditions for the competition, the organizers and those from the Tignes resort provided an amazing playground for the world’s elite to reveal their talent. Following the Nissan Freeride de Tignes, the announcement was made for those qualified for the grand finale of the Freeride World Tour March 21st, the mythical Nissan Xtreme de Verbier. More

The Nissan Freeride de Tignes set for Thursday morning on the Grand Balme

The decision to wait until Thursday, March 12th to hold the competition paid off: with the heavy snowfall in Tignes over the past two days, around one meter of fresh snow has accumulated on certain faces. Thanks to these exceptional conditions and the thumbs up from the mountain guides in charge of security, the Nissan Freeride de Tignes will finally take place on the Grand Balme! With more than 500 vertical meters and perfect natural terrain, the Grand Balme face has already been host to numerous major freeride competitions since 2001. The world’s best athletes will thus climb this mythical mountain with the French leading the favorites: Aurelien Ducroz (ski) and Xavier de Le Rue (snowboard) are currently leading the Freeride World Ranking and are on the quest for their first victories to secure their Freeride World Champion titles. Guerlain Chicherit, the freeride champion from Tignes, will take on his home turf participating in only this competition and be one of the outsiders to look out for. He will be judged by one of the great French freeride champions of all time, Manu Gaidet, who has joined the team of judges for the Nissan Freeride de Tignes. The show starts at 9am at the foot of the Grand Balme. Here are some picts of the organization team going to check the contest venue: More

Competition postponed until Tuesday, March 10th at the earliest

The third stage of the Freeride World Tour 2009 will take place in the French resort of Tignes. The north face of Pramecou, at more than 3000m of altitude, has been chosen as the best spot for the competition. With over 40 cm of fresh snow this week and mild weather predicted for Sunday for the inspection, the competition should allow the world’s best riders to reveal their talent. After the stages in Sochi, Russia and Squaw Valley USA, the Nissan Freeride de Tignes is the only stage in France just before the grand finale: the Nissan Xtreme - Verbier scheduled March 21st. The first possible day for the contest is Tuesday, March 10th. The final decision will be taken by the organisers on event day d-2 at 6pm and communicated on www.nissanfreeridetignes.com. More

Final results: Nissan Tram Face - Squaw Valley USA The mythical Tram Face left untouched for now

The Nissan Tram Face in Squaw Valley USA, second stage of the Freeride World Tour, ends with the cancellation of the second day. The organizers were obliged to regretfully cancel the much awaited second day focusing on the quality of the competition and riders’ security. The mythical Tram Face is still to be conquered. After a fantastic first day of competition on the Silverado Face (Friday, February 27th), a winter storm hit the California mountains thus the second day of competition of the Tram Face cannot take place. After having admired the slopes and thinking about possible lines, the Freeride World Tour riders will leave the United States for Europe for the third stage and a new challenge: the Nissan Freeride de Tignes that will take place Monday, March 9th.
